SEO title: HalloweenCostumes.com costumes — WeAdU
Client
HalloweenCostumes.com is a leading US online retailer specialising in costumes and accessories for themed events — a vast inventory across all age groups in one of the most competitive seasonal categories in e-commerce.
Challenge
Running Google Ads for a seasonal business like HalloweenCostumes.com brings its own set of challenges. Costume demand spikes dramatically around Halloween, so timing and budget strategy have to be fine-tuned to capture the highest returns in a short window. The competitive landscape intensifies as many retailers promote similar products, demanding distinct, attention-grabbing ads. Accurate, real-time inventory management is essential so ads reflect in-stock items and prevent frustration over unavailable products. Clear communication of shipping deadlines matters too, reassuring customers their costumes will arrive in time. And top-quality visuals are a must, requiring careful planning of ad creatives to showcase costumes and attract buyers.
Approach
To address these challenges and enhance performance, we implemented a comprehensive strategy built on proven clothing-industry techniques:
- Performance Max with asset groups per product category. Distinct Asset Groups for each type — kids' costumes, adult-themed, pop-culture — aligned creative and targeting with each audience segment, lifting engagement and conversion rates while giving control over how products were promoted.
- Initial focus on feed-only asset groups. To minimize risk and prioritize high-ROI channels, we began feed-only on Google Shopping and Dynamic Remarketing — highly visual, product-centered placements ideal for costumes — collecting quality data for Google's bidding algorithm without spreading budget thin.
- Category-specific audience signals to guide AI. Signals tailored to each category — pop culture and events for adult costumes, family and parenting for kids' costumes — helped Google's AI deliver ads to the most relevant users and optimize reach and engagement per product type.
- Incremental asset expansion to scale reach. Once feed-only groups showed steady conversions, we added headlines, descriptions and high-quality images to broaden beyond Shopping and Remarketing into Search, Display, YouTube and Discovery — capturing customers from early awareness to final decision.
- Video ads for enhanced engagement. Because costumes are highly visual, video ads showed products in action so buyers could picture themselves wearing them — dynamic content that captured attention quickly, especially on YouTube.
- Device-specific ad groups. Separate mobile and desktop ad groups allowed device-specific optimizations, with adjusted headlines and descriptions so ads displayed fully everywhere, improving clarity and credibility.
- Dynamic Search Ads for expanded reach. DSAs used website content to match ads to relevant searches, capturing long-tail queries for niche costumes without managing a massive keyword list.
- Responsive Search Ads to optimize combinations. RSAs tested multiple headlines and descriptions so Google's AI could surface the highest-performing combinations in real time, maximizing relevance and engagement.
- Ad extensions for greater engagement. Sitelinks directed users to sections like "New Arrivals" or "Kids' Costumes," while callouts highlighted free shipping and easy returns — helping ads stand out and lifting click-through.
- Consistent performance analysis and optimization. By monitoring CTR, ROAS and conversion data across groups and asset types, we adjusted bidding, targeting and creative proactively — increasing budgets for high-performing segments as demand rose toward Halloween to stay competitive at peak without compromising ROAS.
