What is the description in Merchant Center?
WeAdU · Updated 5 October 2026
The description attribute `[description]` is about the product itself in Merchant Center: features, specifications, and how it looks. Title and category are different attributes.
What does it leave out?
Company history and company policies do not belong in the description, and neither do compatible products, accessories, or a neighbouring product. There is no link in this text: the landing-page address goes in the link attribute. A category path is not copied here either. It belongs in the Google product category or the product type, both already defined. Price, sale price, dates, shipping, and the company name stay out of the description as well.

What does the help require?
The help page read on 13 October 2026 makes the description required for each product, and the text has to stay consistent with the title and the landing page. A product with no description gets a warning, and serving can be limited. A description written with generative AI is sent as a structured description `[structured_description]`, with the digital source type `trained_algorithmic_media` and the text in the content sub-attribute. If both the description and the structured description are submitted, only the description is kept.
What comes first?
Write in a professional tone, without capitals used for emphasis and without comparing the product to another. Lead with the details that define it: material, shape, pattern, use, variant. The title, already in the glossary, names the product, and the description fills in what the name leaves out. A bundle or a multipack is described as a whole, not only the main item. The title entry is left as it stands.
Where is the catalogue already described?

What does the WeAdU audit cover?
