What is the image link in Merchant Center?
WeAdU · Updated 5 October 2026
The image link attribute `[image_link]` is the address of the main product image in Merchant Center. The landing page and any secondary view use other attributes.
What does it not name?
The image link points at the main photo. Other angles go in the additional image link `[additional_image_link]`, and a shot of the product in use goes in the lifestyle image link `[lifestyle_image_link]`. The link attribute is what opens the landing page. A custom label and the feed label are not this address.

What does the help require?
The help page from 13 October 2026 makes the image link required for each product. The address starts with http or https and points at a file whose extension matches the format: JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF. There is a single address for the main image. Googlebot and Googlebot-image have to be able to fetch it, and the address stays stable from one upload to the next.
What keeps the image out?
An image is turned away if it carries a price, a discount, a call to action, a watermark, a logo added after the shot, or text such as "coming soon". A plain colour square is turned away too, except where the colour is the product, such as a paint. A border is turned away as well, and so is a product that is not sold with the item. Each variant has its own image, the one for the colour and finish submitted. An image made with generative AI keeps its IPTC metadata, including the digital source type. The entry explains the attribute, and stops short of a fix.
